Review on the role of antioxidant supplementation against oxidative stress: a human and animal approach to male fertility

Male infertility is one important factor among the multifactorial causes of couple infertility, being oxidative stress main related sources. Sperm a specialized cell extremely susceptible to stress. To understand and mitigate this event, many studies have used different antioxidants, orally or in vitro supplementation, trying improve sperm quality function. Considering extensive available literature regarding approaches attempts solve male fertility issues, aim review evaluating effects antioxidant supplementation on sperm, both humans experimental models with animals. This selected original data from PubMed. The keywords were: antioxidant, fertility, infertility; term "rodents" was added descriptors “antioxidant” “male fertility”. Only published indexed journals, English, between 2015 2019 were included. involves i) human ii) rodent sperm. For approach, search retrieved 496 articles 80 included, which 28 19 involved oral remaining 33 concerned quantification oxidants antioxidants already present seminal samples. 152 52 included: 3 varicocele, 11 diabetes, 10 therapeutic drugs, physical exercise, environmental exposure heat status models. Antioxidants use for reproductive purposes increasing an attempt achieve better gametes embryos. Vitamins C, B E, selenium zinc are most commonly remarkable evidences improving pathophysiological conditions.
